A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in Peterborough city centre is to be extended for three years, helping to crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour.

Cabinet members today approved plans to extend the city centre PSPO until April 2029, as well as varying its conditions. Plans to vary conditions of the Millfield PSPO were also given the go-ahead.

Both orders were set up to tackle issues having a detrimental effect on people’s lives including anti-social behaviour and are aimed at keeping communities safe, cohesive and healthy. Anyone caught breaching a PSPO condition can face fines of up to £1,000 or Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs).

The move to extend and vary the PSPOs follows a recent public consultation. Ninety-six per cent of respondents were in favour of extending the city centre PSPO for three years, whilst 100 per cent supported a condition change to the Millfield PSPO, prohibiting the consumption of alcohol in public open spaces there.

Cllr Zameer Ali, Cabinet Member for Communities, Poverty and Public Health, said: “Maintaining a PSPO within the city centre and varying the Millfield PSPO supports our key aims of keeping our communities safe and making Peterborough an attractive place, to live, visit or work as well as helping businesses to thrive in these areas.

“I would also like to thank everyone who took part in the public consultation, giving us vital feedback in our ongoing work to enhance communities.”

By varying and extending the city centre PSPO for three years, council officers and the police will have additional powers dedicated to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour there, helping to improve the quality of life for residents, shoppers and visitors alike.

Between April 2023 and October 2025, 658 FPNs were issued for breaches of the city centre PSPO. A total of 339 instructions were issued to disperse individuals from the area for alcohol or anti-social behaviour concerns, with 17 warnings also issued.

As the city centre PSPO and the Millfield, New England, Eastfield and Embankment PSPO are closely situated and experience similar issues, the council proposed varying the conditions of the Millfield order. As a result, people within the Millfield PSPO area will be prohibited from consuming alcohol or being in possession of an open vessel containing alcohol, other than on licensed premises.
