We are inviting residents, businesses and community groups to share their views on how the city can prepare for the increasing risks posed by extreme weather.

The consultation focuses on extreme heat, drought and flooding, all of which Peterborough has experienced in recent months. We want to hear about your experiences, understand which adaptation measures matter most to you and identify local organisations already helping communities adapt.

About the Climate Adaptation Plan

Peterborough is expected to face worsening impacts from climate-related hazards and the council is actively working to help protect residents, businesses, buildings and infrastructure.

With funding from the Shared Prosperity Fund, we drafted a Climate Adaptation Plan to assess the city's vulnerabilities and set out a strategic approach to improving resilience.

Research on high warming scenarios presented in the Adaptation Plan indicates that by 2040, compared to 2005, Peterborough could see 17 more heatwave days annually. It could also see 8% more rain in extreme 48-hour rainfall and a 3.5x higher likelihood of extreme dryness over a 3-month period.

This Climate Adaptation Plan envisions a resilient Peterborough, where residents, communities, businesses, and natural ecosystems can withstand and adapt to climate challenges. The draft key adaptation goals which we’re looking for feedback on are:

  • Protect People: Enhance emergency preparedness and support vulnerable populations during extreme weather events.
  • Safeguard Infrastructure: Strengthen the resilience of healthcare facilities, social care, education and housing infrastructure, as well as transport, energy and water systems, to ensure they can withstand increasing climate pressures.
  • Enhance Natural Systems: Expand and enhance green infrastructure, such as parks, woodlands, and wetlands, to support biodiversity, reduce flood risk, improve drought resilience, and provide natural cooling during heatwaves.
  • Promote Collaboration: For Peterborough City Council to play a convening role, working with residents, businesses, utility providers, and public service agencies to ensure a coordinated and effective response to climate change risks.

The Climate Adaptation Plan will be updated following the consultation and will be considered for adoption by Peterborough City Council.
