Residents are invited to view detailed plans and speak to the design team behind Peterborough’s new leisure development at an event taking place on Tuesday 19 May.
The council announced last year its intention to deliver a new swimming pool and leisure development for residents and secured £20m from the Government towards the cost of the project.
Since then, officers have been working at pace to develop plans, working closely with partners including Alliance Leisure, the council’s delivery partner.
Initial engagement took place earlier this year using an online survey which attracted 934 responses. A number of focus groups were also held with residents.
The feedback from residents has been used to inform the current designs which will be shown to residents at the event taking place on 19 May at Sand Martin House, Fletton Quays. People will be able to drop-in between 10am and 7pm.
At the open day there will be information about the different elements that will form part of the development, as well as floor plans including information on changing facilities which will include communal and private spaces, timelines, transport options and sustainability and net zero considerations.
Plans at this stage are for an eight-lane, 25 metre pool, 20m activity pool with a moveable floor, a cafe, family play, health and wellbeing rooms, a 150-station fitness suite and two studios, plus a spin studio.
Jamie Fenton, Culture Sports and Leisure Partnership Manager for Peterborough City Council, said: “We know that residents are still feeling the loss of the Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre and that is why we are moving as quickly as we can to deliver a new, modern facility for the city.
“We had a fantastic response to the initial engagement activity earlier in the year and we have used what people told us to develop the next phase of planning and designs.
“It is really exciting to be at a stage where we can show these to people and start having conversations around what a new leisure development will offer our residents. Please come along to Sand Martin House on 19 May to find out more and ask questions about this very exciting development.”
More than half of the anticipated costs of the development have been secured, thanks to a £20million funding announcement by the Government in November from its Growth Mission Fund, subject to the submission of a full business case. The council has committed to funding the remainder of the project, expected to be around £16m, but also continues to seek private sector funding or grants to assist with the costs.
A planning application for the development, which will be built south of the university and adjacent to the Athletics Track, overlooking the Embankment, is due to be submitted in July.
If approved, construction work is likely to start in early 2027 with completion expected in 2028.
