Cabinet will be asked to approve plans to accept almost £800,000 of grant funding to go towards a major £3.8 million refurbishment of a popular city swimming pool.
The planned revamp of Jack Hunt Swimming Pool in Ledbury Road, Netherton, Peterborough is the second facility that is set to undergo a makeover as part of a two-year investment programme in the city’s swimming facilities.
While the city council continues to progress plans for a new leisure centre and indoor pool on the Embankment, this investment plan aims to ensure the city’s existing swimming facilities are maintained and upgraded to ensure they can be enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years to come.
The Jack Hunt Pool proposals follow Cabinet agreeing to refurbishment works at Vivacity Premier Fitness at its last meeting in June.
Both projects aim to carry out vital maintenance works at the pools to future-proof the facilities and reduce the risks of unplanned closures because of maintenance issues.
Cllr Zameer Ali, Cabinet Member for Communities and said: “We know from all the feedback we receive from residents how vital it is we have high-quality swimming facilities in our city. That is why, alongside the plans for the new Leisure Centre and indoor swimming pool we also want to invest in our other existing pools to make sure they can be enjoyed by swimmers of all ages for many years to come.
“Jack Hunt is a very well-used and well-loved facility both by local swimming clubs, school pupils and the local community. However, it was built in the 1970s, after almost fifty years there are parts of the facilities that desperately need attention and need updating, replacing and modernising so the pool can continue to be enjoyed for swimmers for many years into the future.
“We cannot afford to lose an asset like this which would deprive residents, especially children and young people, of essential opportunities for physical activity, skill development, and social engagement.
“These works are part of our wider investment in our swimming facilities that we are carefully scheduling in to ensure there will always be public swimming facilities available in the city throughout all the works.
“This investment shows that our administration is fully committed to providing quality leisure facilities in Peterborough.”
At its meeting on 21 July 2026, Cabinet will be asked to accept a £794,000 grant from Sport England towards the refurbishment works at Jack Hunt Swimming Pool in Ledbury Road, Netherton.
The work is expected to start in Spring 2027 and be completed by September 2027.
