Our administration is making big progress on major projects and hot on the heels of plans for a new swimming pool, we’re now looking to transform a prominent city centre building.
The future of the former TK Maxx building has long attracted much debate, but I’m pleased to say this is set to be resolved, with plans to approve its sale going before Cabinet next week.
Members are set to be updated on the outcome of a recent marketing exercise, which recommends the sale of the building to MJS Investments (March) Limited.
Approval is also being sought to use the funds from the sale to re-allocate back into the Towns Fund, following the building being originally purchased by the Conservative Administration for £4,164,346 (including fees) in 2020, of which £4,000,000 was funded by the Towns Fund grant.
The building had initially been identified for The Vine project, however in 2023 it was confirmed the refurbishment of the building to develop the project was no longer economically viable. To recap, The Vine is now set to be delivered across two sites including Central Library and Peterscourt
The marketing exercise was positive reflecting the market’s continued interest in the city and resulted in six bids, all of which align with our need to achieve best value. The sale value is less than the price originally paid in 2020, but this reflects market changes in recent years.
Whilst I can’t pre-empt Cabinet’s decision, this would be a significant sale and we’re confident that the developer can breathe new life into the site.
Not only is our administration driving positive change, but we are also listening to community concerns and taking action.
At last week’s full council meeting, members supported two important motions from councillors. I want to congratulate Cllrs Mohammed Jamil and Noreen Bi for their motion to establish a National Standard and Funding Support for CCTV in Licensed Vehicles.
I can assure you that this Administration takes the safety of women, girls and all others extremely seriously and believe that CCTV in licensed vehicles would support safeguarding.
My heart was warmed by our new Christmas fostering film, capturing how one couple’s life transformed when they opened their home and became foster carers.
This time of year is always a moment to reflect on what truly matters. For children in care, the greatest gift is not material possessions, but the assurance of safety, love and belonging. This poignant campaign shines a spotlight on the everyday moments that make fostering so special. It is aimed to inspire more residents to consider Fostering. You can watch it on our Youtube account.
I am so proud to lead a council that has some absolutely wonderful staff who are achieving great things.
Last week, members of our Reablement team dressed up as Elves and organised fundraising activities, which have generated a massive £2,027 for the Alzheimer's Society UK.
I want to thank everyone involved with this fantastic initiative. Many people we support in Reablement benefit from the help and guidance the Alzheimer's society provides and I'm delighted we are giving something back to them.
Finally, I was so happy to have met with Peterborough Positive, our Business Improvement District (BID) and under Pep Cipriano’s leadership, was able to see some of the fabulous work they do with local businesses and the contribution and plans they have for the city centre.
