Dedicated volunteers who have helped the council to keep Peterborough tidy have been given special thanks for their tireless efforts.
Six volunteers from the Peterborough Litter Wombles (PLW) were recently given free family day passes for the Vivacity Peterborough Lido as a small mark of thanks from the authority.
The goodwill gesture was made to recognise the hard work of the PLW in recent years, with the group carrying out regular litter picks across the city.
The authority continues to work closely with the group, and its sister organisation the IRC, on schemes aimed at tackling littering in Peterborough. In recent years, this partnership has overseen successful spring clean campaigns which have seen hundreds of bags of litter collected by volunteers.
Councillor Chris Wiggin, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “I am delighted that we have officially recognised these dedicated volunteers and given them special thanks for their efforts, I hope they enjoy using their passes at the Lido.
“The PLW and other volunteer groups are working tirelessly, alongside the council, to tackle littering which is a blight on our communities. We will continue to work with them as well as encouraging people to reduce waste and get rid of litter correctly.”
Harry Machin, founder of PLW, said: “I would like to thank the council for these passes, it’s a lovely gesture. The six people receiving the passes are a few of the many active volunteers who have made such a difference to Peterborough in recent years. I would like to thank everyone, both groups and individuals, who take part in litter picks in residential areas and look after the lamp post bags and bins that we maintain.”
The council spends significant funds every year clearing up litter which could be spent on other essential services and exciting projects.
There is lots of helpful advice about litter disposal on the council’s website, as well as information on how to report littering and fly-tipping.
