Local metal detectors are being reminded that there is a no-detecting policy on all land owned by Peterborough City Council.
To detect on an area of land, permission must be given by the landowner. Detecting on areas where you do not have consent, which includes PCC-owned land, can constitute trespassing.
In cases where this results in the acquisition of treasure or items of cultural/historical items, this can also class as theft.
Please make sure to check whether the land you are planning to detect on is owned by the council.
Councillor Christian Hogg, cabinet member for regulatory services and enforcement for Peterborough City Council, said, “Residents who enjoy metal detecting should only do so on their own property or with permission from the relevant private landowner. The council does not grant consent for metal detecting on its land, so we remind everyone to always check before you detect.”
