More families in Peterborough will soon be eligible to access free school meals.
The eligibility criteria for free school meals are expanding from 1 September 2026 meaning that all school-aged children in households on Universal Credit, regardless of income, will be eligible for them.
This means that families in Peterborough could save up to £495 per year per child on school lunches, making a substantial difference for families with multiple children.
The council is now urging families to check their eligibility and apply for free school meals as soon as possible. Families already receiving free school meals should also reapply as eligibility will be rechecked for the new academic year. Children eligible for the 'Targeted' Free School Meals will continue to be eligible for the Holiday and Activity Food programme (HAF).
Councillor Katy Cole, Peterborough City Council's Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: "I am absolutely delighted that the government has expanded the free school meals offer, meaning that many more families in Peterborough will benefit from this vital scheme. Accessing this support not only benefits your child but also helps your school secure additional funding.
"As a council we are fully aware that many families are still in need of help and we are fully committed to supporting them. I would urge families to check their eligibility and apply as soon as possible, you can do this via an online form on our website, which is a quick and easy process."
