Myth – The council is often criticised for the number of roadworks projects taking place in the city and asked why works sometimes take place at the same time, rather than being spaced out.
Fact – Many of the highways projects that the council commissions are secured via grant funding from the government or other external organisations.
In order to secure this funding, the council is often required to carry out the works within certain timescales, otherwise the money would not be made available. As a result, highways projects are sometimes required to take place at similar times.
Some works can only be done at certain times of the year due to the weather, for example, during winter months when it’s too cold and wet we can not carryout resurfacing or line marking.
It is also worth pointing out that not all roadworks taking place in Peterborough are the council’s responsibility, for example, repairs to gas or water pipes will be carried out by private companies, subject to their own timescales.
The council has a duty to ensure that the city’s highways system is well maintained and safe for all motorists to use. As such, our officers regularly monitor our roads and pathways and will always look to make improvements where possible.
Whenever roadworks take place that are likely to cause disruption, the council will always look to publicise these on its social media channels.
