Young people in Peterborough are set to benefit from a major new expansion of youth services and activities outside of school, as part of an exciting national initiative.

The Department for Culture Media and Sport has today announced that local authorities including Peterborough City Council will benefit from a share of £88 million, aimed at re-connecting young people with their communities and offering them opportunities to build skills for life and work.

This will see youth clubs and schools supported to offer more after-school activities, whilst organisations like the Scouts and Guides will deliver more places in local communities.

The investment includes the rollout of the Local Youth Transformation pilot, an £8 million programme to support 12 local authorities including Peterborough City Council to deliver a high-quality out-of-school offer and invest in impactful local youth offers.

The council is currently awaiting confirmation on how much funding it will get. Once full details are received, officers will work with partners to draw up an action plan aimed at developing a high-quality offer for young people and implementing a transition back to local youth services leadership.

Councillor Katy Cole, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have successfully secured funding as part of this vitally important scheme, which again demonstrates this government’s commitment to supporting young people. We are fully committed to making Peterborough a 'child friendly' city, alongside having ambitious plans to establish the first Youth Zone in the region in the city.

"This funding will help develop a local youth offer which addresses the needs of young people in Peterborough and supports government priorities. We will work to secure a high quality youth offer reflecting the changing needs of young people and enabling them to lead richer lives.”
