Plans to enhance Peterborough city centre as part of an exciting regeneration scheme are progressing at pace, with several positive proposals currently being considered.

Peterborough City Council announced in December 2025 that it had secured £1.5million as part of the government's national Pride in Place Impact Fund, which will see it receive £750,000 in two tranches over two separate financial years (2025/26 and 2026/27).

The council can combine these funds but must commit to spending them on projects by March 2027. Schemes will be aimed at improving community and public spaces, as well as revitalising the high street and general city centre area.

Since the announcement was made, consultations have taken place with a wide range of partners including local businesses via the Bondholder network, Peterborough Positive and the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough as officers look to develop projects that will help to boost the area.

Since the announcement was made, consultations have taken place with a wide range of partners including local businesses via the Bondholder network, the Peterborough Tourist Board, and Peterborough Positive as officers look to develop projects that will help to boost the area.

Among the plans currently being considered are; restoration and refurbishment of the Guildhall, improvements to Cathedral Square including new seating, planting, and market infrastructure, creating new public toilets and installing play and exercise equipment.

Cllr Mohammed Farooq, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration, said: “We are fully committed to working with partners to enhance our city centre, helping to ensure the area is vibrant and welcoming for residents, shoppers, visitors and businesses alike.

“I am looking forward to seeing our initial proposals developed over the coming months and I want to thank everyone involved for their dedicated efforts so far. I also want to emphasise that no final decisions have been made on which projects will be taken forwards, but we hope to make further announcements in due course, so watch this space.”

Andrew Pakes MP said: “The Pride in Place Impact funding is the next step in helping to turn around the city centre. This investment will help spruce up the Cathedral square and build on the existing work of Peterborough Positive, businesses and the council.

“I fought hard for to bring this extra funding to the city and it has been great to see all the different ideas on how it could be used. Alongside the funding for the new pool and investment in the Station Quarter we are beginning to turn a corner."

Other proposals being considered include improvements to mooring facilities and enforcement along the Embankment, enhancements to wayfinding infrastructure, improved lighting, greening of the city centre, upgrading street furniture including benches and bins, as well as new lighting for Town Bridge.

Meanwhile, there is still time to share your views on the future of Peterborough city centre.
