April marks Stress Awareness Month, a timely reminder of the importance of looking after our mental and physical wellbeing.

This year, as part of our Peterborough Get Moving campaign, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the simplest, most accessible ways to manage stress: movement. Whether it’s a brisk walk in the park, stretching at your desk, or dancing in your kitchen, every bit of movement counts towards a healthier, happier you.

Why movement matters

Modern life can leave us feeling overwhelmed and under pressure, but moving more - even in small ways - can be a powerful tool for reducing stress. Physical activity encourages the release of endorphins, those feel-good hormones that help to lift our mood and lower anxiety levels. It also provides a welcome distraction from daily worries, giving our minds a chance to reset and refocus.

The science behind movement and stress reduction

There’s plenty of evidence to support the link between movement and stress management. Regular physical activity has been shown to decrease levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It can also improve sleep quality, boost self-esteem, and promote a sense of achievement - all of which contribute to better mental health. Importantly, you don’t need to run marathons to see the benefits; even gentle, consistent movement makes a difference.

Small changes, big impact

Incorporating more movement into your day doesn’t have to be daunting or time-consuming. Here are some easy, practical ways to get started, no matter your age or fitness level:

  • Take short walks: Try adding a ten-minute walk during your lunch break or after dinner.

  • Stretch often: Stand up and stretch every hour, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting.

  • Use the stairs: Choose stairs over lifts or escalators whenever possible.

  • Dance it out: Put on your favourite song and have a quick dance around the living room.

  • Get active with others: Invite friends or family to join you for a stroll or a gentle exercise class.

  • Try desk exercises: Simple chair squats, calf raises, or neck rolls can be done almost anywhere.
