A sustainable travel scheme designed to make it easier for people to walk and cycle in Thorpe Wood has been officially opened.

The work, which started earlier this year and was completed last month, has delivered widened footpaths and a cycleway allowing cyclists to travel along Thorpe Wood in both directions. Two crossings have been installed as well as a new bus shelter.

These improvements will enable people to have more choice on how they travel around Peterborough and help people to feel safer when traveling by foot or on wheels.

Councillors and officers along with representatives from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) and M group (the council's highways partner) gathered in Thorpe Wood for an official opening ceremony today (Monday 1 September).

Cllr Angus Ellis, cabinet member for the environment and transport at Peterborough City Council, said: "I am delighted that this vital project has been completed and would like to thank everyone involved, as well as residents for their patience whilst work was carried out. Thorpe Wood is a key link to areas of employment and leisure and this project marks a significant improvement for everyone that uses this route.

“The new infrastructure also links into the new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Nene Parkway, providing a seamless transition between Longthorpe and Thorpe Wood. We are clearly demonstrating our ongoing determination to ensure people can navigate the city sustainably."

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: "Combined Authority funding is helping give people more choice in how they get around. Projects like this make walking and cycling safer and easier, while keeping our city moving. Thorpe Wood is an important link, and this investment will benefit both residents and businesses for years to come."

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority provided a grant of £2 million to Peterborough City Council for the project, via Active Travel England’s Active Travel Funds. The works were delivered by the M Group.
