This incorporates the safe system policy approach in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. A safe system approach means recognising that human error is inevitable, but that road systems can be designed to minimize the harm caused by mistakes.
Road safety is methods, measures and technologies that are used to prevent road users from death and serious injury. It relies on responsible road user behaviour, traffic laws and a safe road infrastructure.

Road safety services provided by Peterborough City Council
All schools in Peterborough are offered a variety of free road safety education packages. All schools are contacted yearly.
Key messages are delivered to each school relevant to the ages of the children/young people. Delivery includes:
Primary:
- Pedestrian training – on road delivery aimed at reception children and their parents.
- Year 4 pedestrian Ttaining – classroom and on road training aimed at year 4 students likely to begin making independent journeys.
- Whole school assemblies – delivery to remind students of key safety messages.
- Safer parking initiatives – working with groups of students to identify issues with parking at schools. Children can design flyers and leaflets for parents/ carers and deliver assemblies on the topic.
Secondary:
- Year 7 workshops to remind students how to safely navigate the roads. Messages include peer pressure, mobile phone use and using crossing points as well as other relevant information.

Post 16 workshops – we recognise that young drivers between the ages of 17 – 25 are more likely to have a collision due to various factors including inexperience. We run various activities throughout the year. These include delivery an engaging and informative presentation to students in this age group.

Cycling
We offer all primary schools the opportunity to participate in bikeability cycle training.
The training encourages children to develop a positive attitude towards cycling and promotes their knowledge, skills and understanding of the road environment.

Free cycle security marking
Free cycle security marking is offered at pop up events in various locations around Peterborough. These are advertised through our social media channels.
School Streets Scheme
School Streets Scheme is an initiative that is running in some schools in Peterborough.
The aim of is to reduce traffic directly outside of schools during the morning and afternoon drop off and pick up. This means that children are safer and it also reduces emissions.
