The Department for Transport (DfT) has allocated funding for the repair or replacement of highway structures that are unaffordable from the local highway authority existing budgets. It has invited local authorities to submit bids for such schemes.
The Structures Fund is only available for structures that local highway authorities and third parties cannot afford to maintain at, or restore to, full functionality themselves.
Crescent Bridge, constructed in 1912, is a steel truss and jack arch structure that carries Thorpe Road (A1179), over the East Coast Main Line Railway immediately south of Peterborough Railway Station. The structure comprises four spans totalling c100m with the main issue being that the bearings have reached the end of their design life and are in need of replacement.
We are principally seeking to replace 16 bearings to the structure. They are located on the eastern abutment located within the car park adjacent to the rail line. A decision on the outcome of our application is expected in autumn 2026.
