The Dad Pledge

We’ve been speaking to local dads across the city to find out what they love about being a parent and what they find hard. Here’s what they told us:

  • Dads want to be there for their families, but can’t always be present for meetings or appointments due to work commitments

  • Dads can struggle with their mental health after the birth of a baby and can be traumatised after witnessing a difficult birth

  • Dads want more antenatal education to show them how to support their partner and their baby

A focus group of dads summarised what they would like to see from organisations and services:

Take time to understand me, know me and my family

Know my name and my relationship circumstances. I may find it difficult to openly admit I am struggling but I appreciate you taking the time to understand my challenges in being a parent.

Include me when sharing information about my child and consider my inclusion when organising appointments at times that suit everyone

I want to know how my child is doing and I want to be part of the discussion so I can support them in the best way. Please consider meeting times so that they are convenient to both parents as I want to attend.

Quality time and playing with my child is important to me

My role in my child’s development is important to me and I want to have a strong attachment. Support me to make the most of the time I spend with them. Support in my job and having family-friendly policies helps me make the most of my time with my family.

Sign up to the pledge

If you are an employer who wants to make your policies more family-friendly, or your organisation works with families and wants to involve dads more, you can sign up to our Dad Pledge. Please contact familyhubprogramme@peterborough.gov.uk.
