Two brothers who were caught on camera dumping household waste have been fined by magistrates.
Florin and Nicusor Ionescu are the latest offenders to be named and shamed as part of Peterborough City Council's Love Where You Live campaign aimed at tackling fly-tipping and littering.
The pair dumped bags and boxes of household waste in South Street, Eastgate, in March 2025. The incident was captured on CCTV by the council's control room operators and an investigating officer was able to locate the offenders' address.
Both men were offered the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty notice but refused, so the council proceeded with prosecutions. A hearing took place at Peterborough Magistrates' Court recently where both men pleaded guilty to fly-tipping. Each were fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £160.
Councillor Chris Wiggin, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "Once again, this successful prosecution shows that we take fly-tipping extremely seriously and will take action against anyone committing it or neglecting their duty of care to dispose of waste properly.
"It also demonstrates the positive joint working between our CCTV operators, enforcement officers and neighbourhood police teams who actively work to hold fly-tippers to account. I want to remind residents that there are several ways to get rid of waste legally, such as by visiting our Household Recycling Centre in Fengate, using a licensed waste company or our free bulky waste collections."
The council recently launched Love Where You Live to highlight how litter and fly-tipping damage our environment, harm wildlife, costs substantial money and spoils the place we call home. The campaign, which is being actively promoted on our social media channels, emphasises that everyone has a part to play in tackling the problems and that by disposing of litter and waste properly, residents can help the council save money and create cleaner and stronger communities.
New website pages have been created, where we will publish live fly-tipping appeals to gather evidence, examples of recent successful prosecutions with offenders named and shamed, as well as comprehensive data detailing incidents across every council ward in the city.
If you witness someone fly-tipping, call the police on 999 and report it as a crime in progress. All instances of fly-tipping on public land should also be reported to us as the local waste authority, whether you witnessed the fly-tipping taking place or not.
