Myth: Peterborough City Council won't allow the disposal of DIY waste at the Household Recycling Centre (HRC)
Fact: Waste generated through larger scale DIY projects such as house renovations, improvement or repair is not legally defined as household waste. The HRC only accepts DIY waste from small scale work and we have updated our policy to quantify the volumes accepted to make it clearer as to what we consider small scale in line with Government Legislation, which was introduced in January 2024. You can read more about this legislation on the government's website.
Further information can also be found on our website www.peterborough.gov.uk/hrc . Anything over and above what we outline is accepted at site, does not fall under household waste and therefore cannot be accepted.
Peterborough City Council are not responsible for the disposal of unlimited quantities and types of waste produced from households in Peterborough. We will always encourage and educate on correct waste disposal, and although using the HRC is one avenue for responsible disposal residents can also consider alternatives such as a bulky waste collection, hiring a skip, using hippo bags, or utilising another registered waste carrier at their own discretion.
