Cygnet Bridge, a major infrastructure initiative in the city, will deliver a new pedestrian bridge across the River Nene, connecting Fletton Quays to the Embankment.

Starting mid-September, essential sewer diversion works will begin. The works are the first step in preparing the site for the construction of the new pedestrian bridge, which will provide a safe and scenic crossing over the River Nene.

To facilitate the works, a section of the footpath along the Embankment will be temporarily closed, with marked diversion routes for pedestrians in place to ensure access is maintained wherever possible.

Cllr Nick Thulbourn, Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration, said: “The bridge is in the final stages of design and undergoing standard industry checks. These enabling works are a vital step forward, and we’re working in tandem to begin early activity that will support the overall build timeline. This bridge will play a key role in creating more a more connected and walkable city, improving access across the Embankment.”

It is expected the works will take approximately eight weeks to complete. The main bridge works will commence in 2026, to avoid the poor weather and flooding over the winter period.

The Bridge is one of eight projects across Peterborough, being delivered as part of the government’s Towns Fund programme, which supports economic growth and regeneration in towns across the country.

The total project budget is currently estimated to be £8.3 million. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has contributed £5.4 million, The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) as pledged £2 million, and the remainder will come from the council's own redevelopment budget.
