Young people in Peterborough are being asked to have their say on who will serve as the city’s new Youth MPs.

Elections will be held in schools and colleges across Peterborough between 16 and 20 March. There will also be a polling station at the Town Hall on Thursday 19 March between 1pm-5pm.

Young people between the ages of 11 and 18 can have their say in the elections.

Youth MPs serve as the voice of young people in Peterborough, putting forward their views at a local, regional and national level through the UK Youth Parliament.

Alongside the UK Youth Parliament election, this year’s ballot will also include the Your Voice, Your Choice vote, which is held every two years. It gives young people across Peterborough the chance to share their priorities and influence the issues the Youth Council will focus on.

On the ballot paper, there will be ten topic options chosen by the Youth Council, and each young person will be able to cast one vote for the issue they feel is most important.

The three topics that receive the most votes will become the Youth Council’s campaign themes for the next two years.

Danielle Daboh and Pranav Aggarwal have been the city’s Youth MPs for the last two years.

Councillor Katy Cole, cabinet member for Children’s Services for Peterborough City Council, said: “It’s been inspirational watching Danielle and Pranav represent Peterborough young people these past two years and I’m keen to see who will be next to step into this important role.

"With 16-year-olds being entitled to vote at the next General Election, it is vitally important that young people get involved in their local communities and champion the opinion of the young people in this city. Here in Peterborough, our population has a large young demographic and we want their voices to get heard.

“All of the candidates have written and filmed brilliant manifestos. Let’s encourage Peterborough’s young people to get involved with local politics and vote on which candidates resonate with them the most.”
