Residents are being asked to have their say on plans to transform a city centre landscape as part of the Peterborough Station Quarter project.

Main construction works on the first phase of the scheme, known as City Link, are due to start in the first few months of 2026 and will create a modern, welcoming gateway between the railway station and Cowgate.

This work will see the removal of the two subways that run underneath the Queensgate roundabout. The landscape will also be enhanced, making the area feel safer and more attractive, whilst improving connectivity between the station and city centre.

In order to construct this scheme, the council is proposing to fell 35 trees on the eastern side of the railway in order to deliver the City Link improvements. The future landscaping proposals will see 49 new trees planted, a net gain of 14 trees. There are also plans for seven additional small trees / shrubs as well as a rain garden and Gabion walls.

The consultation is now live and will run until Wednesday 11 February. All consultation responses will be reviewed before a final decision on any tree felling is made, which will be publicised.

Cllr Mohammed Farooq, Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration, said: “The Station Quarter project is going to be a real game-changer for our city and I'm excited to see work progressing on the scheme.

“Whilst the station is only a 10-minute walk away from the city centre, it’s very disconnected and not easy to navigate, with poorly lit pavements and walkways. City Link will transform this area into a much brighter, safer and accessible route.

“To achieve this, we are planning to fell some trees and it is only right that we ask the public for their views before any work takes place. Please have your say on these plans, it will only take a few minutes of your time, but your feedback is vitally important.”
