Local Authorities have a duty to determine school term dates for local authority maintained schools. Schools must be open to pupils for 190 days in an academic year, and 195 days for teachers. Schools have five training days available to take at their discretion.

Please check the school’s own website to verify term dates and details of staff training dates, which are set at the discretion of the school. Foundation, Trust, Voluntary Aided schools and Academies are responsible for setting their own holiday dates. So individual schools, may choose to follow a pattern and/or specific dates that do not match those set by us.

Thank you to all those who responded. During the period of consultation we received 116 responses. 69 of these responses were in favour of the proposals and 47 were not.

Objections raised comprised of:

  • Not wishing to finish on a Monday, as this may lead to disaggregated PD days or families going on holiday and not attending school for the last day in July.
  • The impact of specific dates on schools’ attendance data.
  • Queries over the actual number of pupil days stipulated being more than the 190 pupil days.
  • Moving the summer term end date to fall earlier than stipulated.
  • Moving the September 2021 start date to fall later than stipulated.
  • Changes to the length of the summer holiday.
  • Changes to half term dates to allow families to take advantage of more affordable holidays.

When setting dates we have, where possible, tried to take account of dates/patterns already set by our local authority neighbours, as well as the objections raised above.

Thank you to all those who responded. During the period of consultation we received 159 responses. 108 of these responses were in favour of the proposals and 51 were not.

Objections raised comprised of:

  • Having part weeks at start or end of term are not helpful.
  • Having term dates that do not exactly match outlying neighbouring LAs is unhelpful for families who live near county boundaries.
  • Christmas should finish earlier as this would reduce the very long Autumn Term and give a better break.
  • Carry on closer to Christmas - e.g. finish on 22nd December; as time after Christmas is more valuable than time before Christmas.
  • The Autumn Term needs more flexibility for families coming back from abroad, be it for holidays or visiting family they have not seen for a year or more.
  • When Autumn Term begins on a Thursday (or Friday) is has impact on our Attendance data.
