Worried about a friend or family member's safety

We all want to do the best for our friends and family and to help them stay safe, well and independent. You may have noticed a change in behaviour, observed risks to their health or seen signs of self-neglect or an inability to care for themselves.

Forgetfulness, memory loss and dementia

The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language.

Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.

This includes:

  • neglecting personal hygiene
  • dressing inappropriately for weather conditions
  • failing to manage medical conditions
  • not eating or drinking properly
  • hoarding

There could be a range of reasons why people stop looking after themselves.

The fire service can carry out a Safe and Well Visit for those at risk of fires or accidents caused by hoarding. They can also advise on safety in the home, falls prevention, home security and scam prevention. Find out more on Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service website.

Equipment and technology allow many people to remain living independently.

Daily living aids can help people to carry out tasks around the home, and 'lifelines' can provide reassurance to family members that a loved one is safe.

We believe that no one should live in fear of violence or abuse. We will take all reports of domestic abuse seriously, consider the needs of individuals and work in partnership with specialised agencies to provide a coordinated response.

We are committed to ensuring that all residents affected by domestic abuse are supported in a sympathetic and sensitive manner. Our employees should act in a non-judgemental way. We have provided guidance and training to employees in contact with, or managing enquiries / cases of residents, who may be affected by domestic abuse.

You can find out more on the Domestic Abuse page.  This page contains help and advice if you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse or sexual violence.

Carers often need support.  You can find out lots of helpful information on our Caring for Someone pages.
