Peterborough Station Quarter is coming soon

This is an exciting opportunity for those who live, work, visit or own a business in Peterborough. The project aims to reclaim, reinvigorate and renew the areas around Peterborough Railway Station - also known as the 'Peterborough Station Quarter' - to create a more enjoyable and accessible space for everyone.

Project summary

The project will:

  • Create a modern, welcoming gateway for pedestrians and cyclists from Peterborough Railway Station to the City Centre (via Cowgate)
  • Enhance the area around the railway station (Station Square)
  • Reconfigure the station buildings at the eastern side, providing a more attractive and accessible entrance
  • Create a new western side entrance of the railway station
  • Build a new multi-storey car park to serve those using the new western entrance

Project aims and benefits

The project aims to:

  • Improve connectivity between the station and city centre
  • Enhance public spaces
  • Improve accessibility
  • Provide a more attractive first impression of the city
  • Improve station capacity and facilities
  • Create a welcoming and vibrant destination on the east and west sides of the station
  • Make the station easier to access with a new entrance on the western side
  • Make the station more attractive by enhancing nearby surroundings to be more friendly and inviting for residents and visitors
  • Improve station to city connections in all directions, bringing the surrounding communities together around the interchange

The environment

The project will support Peterborough as a greener and more sustainable city with healthy wildlife habitats by:

  • Consolidating a large area of surface car parking to unlock land for future uses.
  • Improving biodiversity through the planting of trees, vegetation and landscaped green space.
  • Special consideration will be given to any new drainage arrangements and connectivity to the nearby waterbodies / watercourses such as the River Nene. This is to avoid any volume, flow or water quality changes which could impact negatively on biodiversity.
  • There is potential to implement Sustainable Drainage Systems as part of the drainage design for the scheme.

Project partners

The following organisations are working in partnership to deliver the Peterborough Station Quarter project:

  • Peterborough City Council
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority
  • Network Rail
  • LNER
  • Platform 4 (a new property company created from the merger of London & Continental Railways Ltd and Network Rail's Property Development business)
  • Department for Transport

The initial construction work on the City Link project will be completed by M Group.

Planned works

As of 26 May 2026, work has commenced on the Station Quarter project, beginning with the City Link package. We estimate that the City Link package will be completed in spring / summer 2027. The full Station Quarter works are estimated for completion by the end of 2028.

Stakeholder engagement - your views

We carried out a public engagement exercise in 2024. The feedback was collated and analysed and design proposals updated to reflect your suggestions to shape the final project.

We received:

  • 390 survey responses
  • Feedback from four 1-to-1 sessions which were held with Cycle Forum, Peterborough Civic Society, Camsight, and the Accessibility Forum.
  • Three feedback emails from individuals
  • Three formal written responses received from groups
  • Engagement from 47 local businesses (in-person) in the city centre
  • Feedback from four pop-up events held across Peterborough City Centre with 150+ people engaged through conversations with the Project Team
  • Feedback from one youth webinar which was delivered and attended by our Youth MPs and Youth Council members
  • Feedback from one accessibility workshop which took place with 27 people in attendance

Overall, the stakeholder engagement exercise confirmed that there is a widespread feeling that the current pedestrian and cycle route into the city from the station is deeply flawed.

This is due in large part to the current underpass which makes many people feel unsafe and fails to provide a welcoming prospect for those arriving in the city by rail. It is also felt that the current route is not sufficiently accessible for people with disabilities.

Sustainability measures such as low carbon construction, sustainable drainage, tree planting and green areas to improve biodiversity all have community support.

Accessibility should be a key priority in the new station and surrounding environment, with measures such as ramps, and more specialised parking and toilet lavatory facilities.

The findings of the exercise have fed into the latest designs, where relevant, as have the outputs from more detailed consultation with local interest groups, most notably accessibility. The emerging layout was subject to an audit by Active Travel England and the recommendations have been incorporated into the latest designs.
