Peterborough Station Quarter - project packages
This project aims to reclaim, reinvigorate and renew the areas around Peterborough Railway Station - also known as the 'Peterborough Station Quarter' - to create a more enjoyable and accessible space for everyone.
The project is split into packages, which focus on different areas of the Station Quarter.
City Link
As of 26 May 2026, work has commenced on the Station Quarter project, beginning with the City Link package. We estimate that the City Link package will be completed in spring / summer 2027.

This package of work will create a more direct route for pedestrians and cyclists from Peterborough Railway Station to the city centre (via Cowgate)
The railway station is approximately 10 minutes walking distance of the city centre. Currently the route is not easy or welcoming for people to navigate with a maze of narrow pavements, dark underpasses and pedestrian bridges.
The City Link project will remove two of the three subways that run underneath the Queensgate roundabout (southern and western), creating direct access to the city centre from Cowgate from the railway station. The landscape will also be enhanced, making the area feel safer and more attractive.
Station Square
This package involves development of the area around the railway station to create a welcoming Station Square.
Station Buildings
This package will consist of:
- Refurbishment and extension of the existing station building for a better customer experience through the station.
- Relocation of taxis, drop-off and accessible parking to an area within the current car park. This will free up space in front of the station for the new Station Square, allowing for better onward connections.
- Reconfiguration of the gate line and relocation of the stairs to the existing footbridge over the train tracks to help address passenger congestion on Platform 1 and provide passengers with a better station experience.
Station West
The new western entrance and railway station building will improve access to platforms and other benefits, including:
- Reducing vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist interaction
- Decreasing congestion across Crescent Bridge to help reduce emissions, improving air quality
- Providing a new suitable junction and infrastructure for the new entrance with drop-off points and a multi-storey car park
The new western entrance will reduce journey times for 30% of users accessing the station from the west.
Multi-Storey Car Park
Build of a new car park on the western side of the station.
This will serve those entering the train station from this side and will also free up land on the eastern side by relocating some of the car parking spaces to the west.
