Project aims and design

The aim of this project was to deliver improvements to the section of Lincoln Road between Windmill Street and Searjeant Street:

  • Creating an attractive destination for residents, visitors and shoppers
  • Encouraging more people in the area to walk and cycle
  • Helping boost local business
  • Encouraging more of a café culture

The design of the scheme included:

  • New widened pavements on either side of the road
  • New pedestrian crossing at the Lincoln Road / Alma Road junction
  • New cycle parking, benches and bins

Status of project - complete

Construction work commenced on Monday 7 April 2025. Legal Orders for the new one-way systems, parking restrictions and 20mph speed limit came into force on 16 February 2026. Substantial completion of the project was certified on 16 February 2026.

The original construction programme was 44 weeks. This was eventually extended by one week due to extremely wet weather conditions in the final few weeks of the project which prevented road marking operations from being completed.

The works were completed by M Group Highways (formerly Milestone Infrastructure) and their subcontractor Environ Civil Engineering Limited.

An official opening event was held on 23 February 2026, attended by business owners, local councillors and members of the project team.

Funding

Total funding for this project is £3.4m. We secured £2.4m from the Government’s Towns Fund. Additional funding came from council budget and other sources.
