Baby naming & renewal of vows

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update:

Register Office: The office is open for pre-booked appointments only. For all other enquiries please call 01733 864646.

Marriages and civil partnership ceremonies: While we are aware that the Government has lifted many of the restrictions; we are all still being urged to continue with many of the precautions to keep ourselves and those we care about safe and to reduce transmission of the virus. This is particularly important with rates of the virus higher than we would like in parts of Peterborough.

To ensure that we can continue to provide the services that our residents rely upon, the council has decided not to change the restrictions currently in place for the registration office.

We know this may cause some disappointment, but the council has made this decision to ensure as far as possible that services can continue for all. If our registration staff were to become infected with COVID-19 or needed to self-isolate, we would be left with no choice but to cancel appointments and ceremonies for hundreds of people every week. This in-turn would have a greater impact than limiting numbers permitted to attend a ceremony so that social distancing can be maintained.

The decision will be reviewed by the council at the end of December 2021.

The Lawns Room will remain restricted to 8 people - including the couple, witnesses, guests, and photographer.

We politely request that everyone attending an appointment or ceremony at the Register Office continues to wear a face covering, unless exempt.

Birth registrations: You can continue to register the birth of your baby. There may be a longer wait than usual for an appointment and we thank you for your patience. For more information, please go to the Register a birth page.

Death registrations: These take place over the telephone. You must not come to the Register Office. Please ensure the contact number you give us when making your appointment is correct as this is the number the registrar will phone you on to complete the registration. During the call, the registrar will explain the process for the paperwork. For more information, please go to the Register a death page.

Naming ceremony

A naming ceremony is designed to provide a dignified and formal opportunity to welcome a new member to the family and to the community.

During the non-religious ceremony you can announce the names that you have chosen, make commitment promises to your child and also choose other adults to provide support. Family and friends are usually invited to share in the occasion.

These ceremonies are not just for babies - children of any age can have a naming ceremony. A commemorative certificate will be signed and presented as part of the ceremony.

Renewal of vows

The ceremony can be associated with a special anniversary but is just as appropriate for couples at any stage of their marriage or partnership who wish to celebrate their commitment to each other.

A commemorative certificate of the renewal of vows ceremony will be signed and presented during the event.

This non-religious ceremony is chosen by you to create a unique event to be remembered and shared by your family and friends.

The occasion can be held in the Lawns ceremony room at the register office or at one of our licensed venues in the Peterborough district.

Our fee includes a commemorative certificate of the occasion and a personalised copy of your ceremony script which will be presented to you as a lasting memento of the day. At the booking appointment we will discuss your ceremony requirements and collect the appropriate fee. We accept payment by cash, cheque/postal order or credit/debit card.

Ceremonies held in the Lawns room or at a licensed venue: Monday to Thursday*
